TRAVEL?Qantas Link fly regularly from Sydney, Brisbane and, [for part of the year], Coffs Harbour. Go to www.qantas.com for details. Frequent Flyer seats are particularly cost effective on this run, unfortunately only a few seats are allocated to each flight so book early for frequent flyer seats!ACCOMMODATION?The Lord Howe Tourism Association runs an informative web site at www.lordhoweisland.info.com This site also lists major travel agents that deal with the Island. It is often cheaper to take a combined accommodation/travel package than to purchase the individual components separately.WHEN TO COME?Lord Howe can offer excellent fishing year around, but there is a certain amount of seasonality for some species, and some months are better than others for weather. At Oblivienne we start our main boat fishing season at the 1st of October and finish 31st May, and there is generally some great light tackle and/or deep reef fishing to be had right through this period.November to late May is our Gamefish season, though we do pick up Gamefish right through the year. For Fly Fishing October to mid December and late February to late May are the best times, but we do have fly options year around. June to October we continue to operate our smaller boats but it can be a windy time of year and days available for boating are reduced. The fishing is still good at this time of year and it's a great time for Shore Based fishermen, with a consistent lee on the Eastern side and value season rates for travel and accommodation. WHAT GEAR TO BRING?This is such a large topic that we prefer to discuss it after you make your booking and we know the sort of fishing you favour. It is important to remember that the luggage allowance here is small [14kgs], DON'T PACK THE KITCHEN SINK! You can show up here with nothing but your fishing shorts and we could provide everything else you need. We also operate THOMPSONS GENERAL STORE which provides a complete fishing service with tackle sales and hire, bait, berley, daily tide and weather updates, and plenty of free advice.WHAT FISH SPECIES?Fishing in the LAGOON we primarily target Doubleheader Wrasse [an endemic wrasse growing to 8kgs and a favourite with Rex Hunt], Silver Drummer, Bluefish [similar to Rock Blackfish but blue], Trevally, and Spangled Emperor, with occasional captures of Kingfish and Kahawai. Around the CLOSE COASTAL grounds we target Kingfish, Trevally, Kahawai, Bluefish, Drummer, Spangled Emperor, and smaller Tuna species. On the DEEP REEFS we target Kingfish, Trevally, Jobfish, various large and small Cod species, and a lucky dip of occasional other species. GAMEFISHING we target Marlin [blue, black, and stripe], Sailfish, Larger Tuna species [Yellowfin, etc.], Wahoo, and Kingfish, with occasional captures of Spearfish and Mahi Mahi.CAN OBLIVIENNE HELP IN OTHER WAYS?Yes! At THOMPSONS GENERAL STORE where we stock everything you need to make your holiday comfortable and successful. In one stop you can set yourself up for the days fishing, and do all your other shopping. We have HIRE CARS available and can organise your booking for these when we book your fishing. Note that there are only 7 hire cars on the Island so book early.WHY THE NAME OBLIVIENNE?You'll have to come over and find out!CONTACT US NOW:Email tbtb@clearmail.com.auPhone 61 2 6563 2185 or 61 2 6563 2155 Fax 61 2 6563 2385. |
